THE HIT musical ‘Our Benny’ is returning to its home town, to the delight of fans all over Merseyside.

The much-loved family show, produced by award-winning director Anne Dalton, was once known as ‘Her Benny’, but has been revamped and renamed in time for Liverpool’s Capital of Culture year.

Aughton star Chris Barton will play the role of Benny, while Bernie Nolan (The Nolans, Brookside, The Bill and Blood Brothers) and Sam Kane (Brookside, Carousel, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers) will star as Sally Wragg and the kindly night watchman Joe Wragg.

Based on the classic Victorian novel by Silas K Hocking and set on the Liverpool Docks, Our Benny is described as a “feel good, rags to riches, family musical”, following the life and times of two street urchins Benny and Nell.

Chris, who shot to fame in the BBC’s quest to find the next Joseph in ‘Any Dream Will Do’, will play the musical’s namesake Benny Bates.

The 21-year-old appears predominately in act two as ‘older’ Benny, when he returns to Liverpool a man and falls in love with his benefactor’s daughter Eva, played by Merseyside actress Emma Dears.

Our Benny is showing at the Liverpool Empire Theatre from November 12 until November 22.
